Winners And Losers (part 2)
With the horizon still eerily flat this morning, the Surf Europe team found themselves back at Bidart beach for their weekly lunchtime game of pétanque:
In red, Paul ‘Bonaparte’ Evans, known for his underhand tactics, constant talk, powerful pointing and, I have to admit, occasional genius passages of play… very much your “in your face” contestant from the UK.
In blue, Tom ‘Big Guns’ Higson, with an evil eye for the jack, debonair air and much more measured touch, representing Switzerland.
And in yellow, the lethal high lobber Archi ‘Big Bertha’ Jaeckin, out-and-out shooter and only home-grown competitor, proud to represent the country that invented this beautiful strategic game.
To sum up the match briefly, it was first to 13 points in 35 minutes played on a challenging gravely terrain with light, offshore winds and pleasant air temperature of 24°C. No spectators were present (thankfully).
After an very even start to the match, it was Higson that broke ahead of the pack. Evans never really looked like much of a threat, only making a last-minute recovery to save some face. Archi, on the other hand, stayed close behind, nearly upsetting the Swissman with a solid 6m + carreau, but Higson’s unshakable nerve paid off in the end.

L'horizon étant resté desépérement plat dans la matinée, l'équipe de Surf Europe s'est retrouvée sur la plage de Bidart pour sa compétition de pétanque hebdomadaire: En rouge, Paul 'Bonaparte' Evans, connu pour ses stratégies perverses, ses roulées en puissance et parfois, très rarement il faut bien l'avouer pour ses coups de génie...en bref le répresentant de choc du Royaume Uni.
En bleu, Tom 'gros bras' Higson, l'oeil malicieux, la mèche au vent et au touché plein de douceur, représentant les Alpages Suisses. Et en jaune, le canonier Archi 'Big Berta' Jaeckin, véritable tireur d'élite de la boule d'acier et le seul compétiteur à jurer en français, fier représentant de la patrie ayant inventé ce jeu d'adresse. Bref, 35 minutes en 13 points, cochonnet à plus de 2 mètres sur un terrain rocailleux mais agréable, vent offshore avec une température de l'air de 24°c. Pas de spectateurs (heureusement).
Après un début de partie équilibré, c'est Tom qui a pris les devants sans vraiment faire la différence. Evans est lui malheureusement toujours resté en retrait en faisant illusion dans les dernières minutes de ce match. Archi, toujours à l'affut a bien failli coiffer sur le fil le suisse grace à un carreau de plus de 6 mètres mais le réalisme du suisse a fini par payer.
