It was another week of top surfing action that took place at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Mr Price Pro last week in Durban, South Africa. Pauline Ado (FRA), 17, reigning ASP European Women’s Junior Champion, flew the flag with the best result of the European contingent when she placed 2nd in the ASP WQS Women’s 5-Star event, losing to current ASP Women’s World Tour campaigner Silvana Lima (BRA).
Ado, who had already reached the final of an ASP WQS 5-Star event at the Rip Curl Boardmasters in Newquay last year, posted a good 13.10 point heat total (out of a possible 20) in the 30-minute decider but was easily defeated by an unstoppable Lima who ended up winning with an exellent 17.83 point heat tally.
“I never expected to get this far in such a major event”, Ado said. “It is only my second WQS event this year as I have been busy with school exams but I am really stoked to get this result.”
Ado, who will attend all Pro Junior and Women’s WQS events this summer in Europe, now sits 42nd on the ASP WQS international ratings with only two results under her belt.
“I am not worried about ratings or points at the moment”, Ado said. “I am learning, getting experience at one-on-one heats in big events, facing the world’s best, and I am enjoying myself a lot.”
Ado’s runner-up finish came after she defeated fellow French surfer and friend Lee-Anne Curren (FRA) in the Semifinals. Curren, reigning ASP European Pro Surf Tour Champion, was another one of France’s standouts in the Mr Price Pro. Clinching valuable 1460 ratings’ points, Curren jumped to No. 14 on the international ratings and remains Europe and France’s most promissing contender towards a possible ASP Women’s World Tour qualification.
In the men’s event, Jeremy Flores (FRA) placed equal 5th for the best European result. Flores, currently No. 13 on the ASP World Tour ratings, was defeated by ASP WQS leader Patrick Gudauskas (USA) in the Quarterfinals after defeating former ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (HAW). Flores, who has been leading European surfing for a couple of years now, showed he was back in good form before attending the Billabong Pro J-Bay, Stop No. 5 of 11 on the ASP World Tour.
Abdel El Harim (MAR), only moroccan representative among the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS), was the second best European surfer in the Mr Price Pro. El Harim, who secured his best result ever with an equal 9th finish, defeated 2X ASP World Junior Champion Pablo Paulino (BRA) and friend Alain Riou (PYF) on his way, before losing to current top WQS campaigner Nathan Yeomans (USA).
