Beware the Black Pen
Troy Brooks wasn't the only one hunched over the WQS ratings at Sunset Beach, computing the possibilities of next year's WCT entries. "I love this part of the year," said Jake Paterson with a Dr Evil-type laugh. He reached across Phil MacDonald, Jarrod Howse and Raoni Monteiro, handing Brooko the infamous pen that would black out the names of the day's losers - and with it, their qualifying campaign: Kirk Flintoff... gone, Tiago Pires... gone. One by one the people that needed results were going down to the higher WCT seeds at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing (the very last event of the World Qualifying Series) - and one by one, the year's speculation was mocked by the irrefuteable black pen, as it wrestled the facts without care of story. ... gone.... gone.
At this stage, Roy Powers and Davie Weare need to make the semis to requalify, the rest, including Jihad Kohdir, need a win. Interestingly though, he will not even compete here, as he was once again refused entry by the US Government at Customs. Must have something to do with his name... Still, pretty heavy! The contest is called off today due to small and messy conditions. While the rest of the surfing community speculate the chances of the final few - and the ASP compute final ratings, there's a pen in the competitor's area, locked away for now like a caged animal in Brooko's bag. And It prepares for the final ritual amongst competitors without argument or remorse."
