Norman Landa hails from the classy Basque city of San Sebastian – famous for hot she-mulleted senoritas, tapas and late night partying. The soft rollers of the La Concha bay gave him his very first rides at around age 5 or 6, but Norman remembers at first that his whole family bar his mum were set against it.
Frederico Morais
One of a hot young generation of Portuguese rippers, Frederico has been turning heads around the contest circuit for a couple of years now. At just 14, he came runner up in the U16 at the National Championships in 2005. That was no freak result mind, he finished 3rd in the Quiksilver Grommets Trophy in 2003, and won National titles at U12 and U14 in 2002, ‘03 and ‘04.

There are loads of variations of this turn, in fact the very best surfers can do several of em in a row and vary each one slightly each time. The important part is busting those fins out of the top of the lip, your message to surfers in the line-up is, ‘Say Hi to these guys.’

Keeping a Secret
When I was a grom I used to obsess about carving 360’s. Whenever I used to surf my home break, which is a good beachbreak peak with a long tapering left off the peak, and a short, bowly right, I always used to go the right. I would take off, go straight down, or maybe even fade a bit off the bottom, then crank the squarest bottom turn I could.
Irie Roundhouse Carve
Trends come and go in surfing, some moves might be en vogue for a few seasons, then fall out of favour as board designs, fashions and surfers themselves change. The roundhouse carve does not fall into this category. Get this right, and you’ll have universal respect no matter where or when you pull it, no matter what your craft. The roundhouse carve is a basic human essential like food, clothing, shelter and good lovin’. You’ll start doing your first forehand cutbacks shortly after learning to bottom turn and pump down the line, and if you put enough practice in, you’ll be jammin’ irie roundhouses just like Appas in no time.
