
Some exciting surfing was seen this weekend at El Mix, Puerto Rico, the beach chosen for the final day of the 2006 ALAS Latin and Caribbean Tour - the last stage of the Reef Classic Latin Pro Puerto Rico. Argentinean Martín Passeri finally raised his hands, claiming the historic title of Latin Champ, right after his closest rival, Jean Carlo Schaffer from Venezuela lost his semifinal heat.

Eight-time world champion Kelly Slater (Florida) made his long-awaited entrance into the 2006 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Series this weekend, seeded into the fourth round of the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach. But Slater's foray into the event wasn't a smooth one, first arriving late to the beach to find his heat already underway, and then narrowly managing a win of what turned out to be the lowest scoring heat of the competition.

After a delayed and windy start to the final day of the Roxy Wahine Cup presented by Peugeot and Samsung, the conditions steadily improved and the weather got warmer by the hour to make way for a blistering finish to the biggest stand alone female surfing event in the country.

Australia's surfing future looks assured with talented trio Teale Vanner (Kangaroo Island, SA), teen star Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW) and Todd Rosewall (Jan Juc, Victoria) all securing berths into the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships by winning national surfing titles at Sharpes Beach near Ballina, Northern New South Wales this weekend.

All the champions from the inaugural event in the 2006 Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Surf Series will be back to defend their titles when the second all girls festival of surf is staged in the holiday paradise of Margate, South Africa on Tuesday and Wednesday, 5 & 6 December.

The Company recently released three new models for purchase including a 5’9’’ Tim Patterson “Black Magic Model”, a 6’2’’ high performance Rusty rounded pin, and Cole Simler’s coveted 5’10’’ bat tail quad with channel rails. Additionally, Aviso aligned with traditionalist shaper Gary Linden for a 6’8’’ compressor design.

Reef strengthens its Hawaiian arsenal consisting of Evan Valiere, Sean Moody and Stephen Koehne with the signing of Tonino Benson to the roster. This 16 year old, Kailua-Kona local is currently finishing up his amateur career as he gears up to chase the WQS and Pro Junior Series in 2007 representing Reef footwear and apparel.

Small waves and the hottest surfing ever to be seen in China greeted locals and surfers at Dong Chong beach near Shenzhen. From the beginning Toby Atkins (UK) and Gabriel Neto (Brazil) looked totally at home in the testing conditions, and both progressed easily to the finals, and then battled to the hooter.

A great week for Toby Atkins placing 2nd in the 720 China Surf Open held in small conditions at Dong Chong Beach in China.

The second stop of the Blowfish Series went down under sunny skies, off shore wind and fun ripple chest high peaks at Oceanside Harbor, California on 25 - 26 November. Just over 120 competitors showed their faces Saturday morning to throw down in the water, get dirty on the beach and stuff their face with Chipotle burritos.

A victorious Sam Lamiroy consolidated one of the best years of his career this weekend when he was crowned British Surfing Champion for the second time at the O’Neill British Surf Championships in Devon.

Local surfing hero, Garrett Parkes (Byron Bay), overcame a shaky start to win his first heat of the 2006 Quiksilver Australian Grommet Titles presented by Samsung which recommenced in clean three-foot (1m) waves at Sharps Beach, near Ballina with round one heats of the U/16 Boys and U/16 Girls hitting the water yesterday.

International footwear brand Kustom has collaborated with world championship tour surfer Joel Parkinson to design a new signature surf shoe. The ‘Parko’, developed over six months by the Kustom product and sales & marketing teams in co-operation with team rider Parkinson, pays tribute to the boardriding club that kick-started his competitive career.

After surfing for two days in poorly formed small waves, a local surfer very familiar with the Playa Avellanas point break in Costa Rica was able to use his experience to come out ahead of 77 registered competitors in this weekend’s Pinilla Classic. That surfer was Tamarindo’s Isaac Vega, the 2005-06 Costa Rican National Surf Champion, who also won this very same date of the Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS) last year.

It has been five years since Sunset Beach surfer Myles Padaca reached the pinnacle of his pro surfing career with a win here in the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing and subsequently a Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title. Now 35, Padaca's intimate knowledge of this challenging break is once again bringing him back to surfing's center-stage.
