
Durban’s Lyle Botcher claimed the Open Men’s division title at the Hutchison Handcrafted Pro held at Surfer’s Point Ballito on the North Coast of South Africa this weekend. Botcher, who lay in second place behind Gavin Roberts for most of the final, snuck into first place in the dying minutes when he caught a shore break wave that allowed him to cram a handful of lightening fast manoeuvres before the wave rolled onto the sand.

Young 19 year old Coolangatta surfer Brent Dorrington has defeated a high quality field and will now take his place in the official Quiksilver Pro Trials next March which will see 16 select surfers chasing the wild card positions into the ASP World Championship Tour Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.

Talented NSW surfers Sally Fitzgibbons (Sth Coast NSW/Geroa) and Tom Myers (Freshwater/Nth Beaches Sydney) won the 16 and under Girl and Boy divisions of the Rip Curl GromSearch National Series held at Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast of Australia this weekend.

Admired by young surfers from around the globe, 28-year-old professional Taj Burrow has confirmed he will host the second annual Taj’s Small Fries surf event at his home beach of Yallingup, Western Australia from January 19-21, 2007.

After a relatively slow start to the Northern Hemisphere big wave season, the last two weeks have produced an almost endless stream of significant swells, first in the Atlantic and more recently in the Pacific. In only four years on the elite World Championship Tour of Surfing, Roxy team-rider Sofia Mulanovich (PERU) has notched up every major accolade in the sport, culminating this week in her win of the esteemed Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Sofia, just 23 years of age, officially clinched the Triple Crown title late yesterday on Maui to receive a $10,000 bonus purse that is the equivalent of a major championship event win.

Paco Divers of Sandy Bay showed that he was a class above his competitors this weekend when he won the final event of the 2006 Rip Curl GromSearch. Divers’ speed and power were exceptional in the final and his performance was nothing short of international standard. By way of winning the event he jumped Matt Hewitt (Mnt) on the 2006 GromSearch standings to take the overall title. Johnny Hicks placed second which secured him a place in the national GromSearch final which will be held as part of the Rip Curl Pro at Raglan in March.

If Kauai's Andy Irons can advance through one more round of the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters, a fourth $10,000 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title will be his, declaring him once more as the top performing surfer across all three venues and events that comprise this esteemed Series.
