
The 2007 Rip Curl Pro Super Series – the year’s most important World Qualifying Series (WQS) event - got underway today on the south west coast of France, in the world famous surf town of Seignosse. It wasn’t a typical sunny summer day in Europe though, instead competitors were met with stormy conditions and wild 5-6ft (2m) surf.

After a four month hiatus from ASP Women’s World Tour competition, World No. 3 Sofia Mulanovich (PER), World No. 4 Samantha Cornish (AUS) and World No. 10 Melanie Bartels (HAW) kick started Round 1, in the first heat of the day. Young Ausie Nicola Atherton (21) has won the second edition of the Billabong Girls Pro Itacare. The conditions were good with waves reaching 3 foot at Praia da Tiririca, as Nicola started the final heat with a 9,25 in her first ride to beat Brazilian sensation Silvana Lima, who finished 2nd, Sofia Mulanovich came in 3rd and Amee Donohoe finished 4th.
Jordy Smith (Zaf) won today the first 6 Star WQS event of his career, defeating Spanish Basque surfer Arits Aranburu (Euk) in a 35-minute final, where the two men had to face testing 5 to 7 ft messy waves.
