Pires Wins Buondi Billabong Pro

Posted on September 03, 2006.

Billabong's top european surfer Tiago Pires sealed a great victory at the Buondi Billabong Pro (WQS event) for the second consecutive year.

In consistent 3-5 ft wave at his home break in Ribeira de Ilhas, Ericeira, Portugal, Pires scored a total 19,20 point in the finals, with two 9+ waves, to secure his win in front of Hawaiian Fred Patacchia.

The huge crowd went off as the siren marked the end of the event and Tiago, wrapped in the Portugese flag, was carried by his fans to the award ceremony stage.

“It’s what I could hope most. Getting another victory in two years is just crazy," said Pires following his win. "The crowd has been so much with me, I just cannot believe it. I’ll now focus on the rest of the year because I still hope to get back on the track for a spot in the top 45,” concluded Tiago, who is now ranking at the 25th place in the WQS ratings.
